jhn brssndn!: This is what democracy smells like →
jhnbrssndn: A shocking day, alright. A day on which an unelected government, acting as a proxy for international finance capital, began its dismembering of Higher Education; on which the State set hundreds of riot cops and mounted police on students, trade unionists and schoolchildren; and on which I…

the other day
onehalfstutters: I was in Bournemouth buying an ice cream, and the old lady in front of me took out her purse to pay. In her purse there was an old black and white picture of a soldier in uniform, smiling at her. After all these years she still carries around that picture. That’s true love (:

Saturday question #1: why are oranges called...
It’s because “orange” (which is derived, orginally, from a sanskrit word) was the name for the fruit before it was the name for the colour. Before we had oranges in England, the word for the colour orange was geoluhread meaning yellow-red. So orange the colour is named after orange the fruit, not the other way around. Next?

From today's front page:
Meanwhile, one woman who arrived in the area to buy a pet parrot from a resident, had to be handed the caged bird over a line of police tape. The woman told the Daily Echo: “I’ve never been to this part of Poole before, I’m not sure I will ever come back.”

What's the weirdest random thing you can remember?
I can remember all the words to the kids book Each Peach Pear Plum. Our deputy editor can recite the names of all the kids in his class when he was eleven. One of the subs can do all the words to the old lipsmacking Pepsi advert. What about you?  PS the words to the theme from Fresh Prince don’t count. everyone can do that.
